We’ve ALL done it….that pit in your stomach that comes once you realize you’ve just lost a whole bunch of pictures off your computer, or irreplaceable documents and files. You swore you would do a better job with a backup- maybe redundant backups- so this would never happen again. Fast forward to today; how is that working for you? If your computer died right now, how would you get your data back?
Enter World Backup Day…a day dedicated to getting awareness out about backing up your computer files and preparing for the worst case scenario in terms of computer data. Ideally, you should have multiple backups (one on-site, one off-site, and/or one in the cloud), but a good start is to review what needs to be backed up, and how you will go about getting it in case of an emergency. Visit http://www.worldbackupday.com/en/ to learn more about how to prepare your computer, or reach out to your trusted computer technician (hopefully Canyonero!) and talk about the best options for your needs.

It’s a grim topic nobody wants to talk about….what happens to all of your online accounts after you die? Facebook recently made headlines when they enabled a new “Legacy Contact” that could be delegated to handle your account in your absence. However, like many other accounts and services, it requires that you proactively set it up correctly beforehand. Gizmodo recently posted a great summary article of many of the top services and accounts people use online, and what steps should be taken before hand to make things easier for those who in charge of things after you’re no longer here. It’s worth a read- and taking an action!

At some point or another, most of us have looked at the cable/internet bill and shuddered at how this cost just seems to keep growing. Since January seems to be a time where we all look at our bills and try to save money…here’s a little tip you might not already know. Look at your bill, and if you’re renting a cable modem (for a fee of anywhere from $5 to $10 a month), Canyonero can help you save some money by purchasing you your own cable modem, which pays itself off in a few short months. If it doesn’t affect you, think of your parents, or elderly neighbors that might benefit from this money saving tip! Give us a call, we’re happy to help quote out a model for you and let you know what you would be saving!

Nothing is worse than trying to log into a website and realizing you don’t remember the password. If you’re lucky, the website has a way to easily reset it….but many times you’re stuck having to remember your “favorite book”, or “favorite teacher” (or better yet, the favorite book or teacher back when you created this online identity). Your quick online task just turned into a 20 minute nightmare as you comb through endless possibilities of answers.
Enter Password Managers. These programs replace the hard copy password log books of yesteryear, often adding useful features like strong password generators, and the ability to sync to your smartphone or tablet. There’s a myriad of different programs to choose from, offering users different many different flavors anywhere from free to paid monthly services.
If you have a sticky note under your keyboard right now with your password on it, or a page in the back of your phone book dedicated to passwords….this message is for you (and NO, you shouldn’t consider doing one of those if you’re not!). There are several different options out there for great, secure password management programs, and it’s time for you to consider one. Not sure where to start? Lifehacker recommends one of these programs, the top 5 rated by their religious readers: http://lifehacker.com/5529133/five-best-password-managers. A good google search for password managers is sure to turn up some different options, as will a check in the app store on your mobile device. Don’t forget….once you have a program picked out, make sure to share the details with your spouse/significant other, and better yet, have the master password written somewhere secure in your home for emergencies.
Got a favorite program you use? Mention it in the comments below!
